Although Carter’s prototype aircraft have not had full hovering capability, SR/C™ technology at its core is directly applicable to hovering aircraft. Given the relationship between drag and power, the rotational component of profile drag at a given airspeed will also be proportional to RPM3 – meaning that a three-fold reduction in RPM in cruise flight translates to a 27-fold reduction in rotational drag, and a 5.5-fold reduction in total rotor profile drag. The result is CarterCopters with hovering capability have similar complexity to helicopters, but deliver 3 times the cruise efficiency or cover the same range on 1/3 the fuel.
